Thegunman,whoseex-wifesaysstruggledwithanger,toldatleastoneperson"I’mnotgoingtoshootyou,"SheriffLaurieSmithsaid."Andthenheshototherpeople.SoIimaginetherewassomekindofthoughtonwhohewantedtoshoot."

Smithsaidthe57-year-oldgunman,identifiedasSamuelJ.Cassidy,arrivedatthelightrailfacilityfortheValleyTransportationAuthorityinSanJoseabout6a.m.Wednesdaywithaduffelbagandopenedfireatabout6:30a.m.intwobuildingsatthesprawlinglightrailhub.VTAprovidesbus,lightrailandothertransitservicesthroughoutSantaClaraCounty,themostpopulatedcountyintheBayArea.

Officialsfoundthreesemi-automatic9mmhandgunsatthescene,whichincluded32individualhigh-capacitymagazinesloadedwithadditionalammunition,thesheriffsofficesaidThursdayafternoon.

InCalifornia,itisillegaltobuymagazinesthatholdmorethan10rounds.However,ifCassidyhadobtainedthembeforeJan.1,,hewouldbeallowedtohavethemunlesshewasotherwiseprohibitedfrompossessingfirearms.
